The second movie I picked up tonight was Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star. I was expecting even less of this movie, and boy did I get a pleasant surprise. Part of that was probably because I didn't realise David Spade played the main character. He's that guy from movies like Joe Dirt.
It had greater depth than I had imagined it would, and it certainly kept me entertained and laughing throughout. This movie will (eventually) find it's way into my DVD collection.
This is not, I might hasten to add, going to win any major awards for a prefect plot. I'm sure it has holes, but in reality I didn't care. It entertained me for a solid 94 minutes, and sometimes that's just the movie you want to see.
Something I don't usually comment on, and probably should, is the transfer to DVD. I watch movies on large (compared to a TV at least) screen. In 4:3 it's 100" diagonally, less in 16:9, and of course even less with 2.35:1. This movie was beautiful to watch (it's a 2.35:1). The audio was really well done - a finely tuned 5.1 setup would be superb (something I've yet to actually get around to doing).
Extra wise? The "True Hollywood Story" on the movie shed some light on the people behind it, and as far as a behind the scenes feature goes, it's probably one of the few I've found watch-able. It had others, but I didn't check them out.
